ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Manager – Regional Rehabilitative Care Program (RRCP) the Occupational Therapist (OT) works within the Community-based Stroke Outreach Program and Regional Rehab Outreach Team to provide therapy (in person and virtually) through an outreach model of care. The OT role includes:

• Providing e Occupational Therapy services on behalf of the Community-based Stroke Outreach Program to clients in communities East of Thunder Bay (ie. Nipigon, Terrace Bay, Manitouwadge, etc) and in remote, fly -in First Nations.
• Providing Occupational Therapy services on behalf of the Regional Rehab Outreach Team to clients throughout the Northwest Region. This is determined based on rehab needs and OT vacancies across the region.
• Services will be provided both in-person in/or near the community that the client resides as well as virtually. In-person care will provided through a combination of outpatient visits, partnering with the local hospital/First Nation Home and Community Care, and providing services in the client’s home.

The Occupational Therapist will work within a regional team including, Physiotherapy and a Stroke Navigator. The team will also have support from the tele-speech Speech Language Pathologist as required.

Occupational Therapy is a regulated health profession that enhances quality of life, promotes participation in productive and meaningful activities of daily living, and empowers individuals allowing them to live life to the fullest by creating solutions that help people do what they want, when and where they want. They work with individuals of all ages whose ability to engage in daily activities has been hampered as a result of illness, chronic conditions, mental health issues, aging, and other health conditions. 

The OT is responsible for triaging referrals, assessing clients, and providing recommendations and treatment to address client goals and enable clients to maximize their level of independence in self-care, productivity and leisure activities. The OT will work as part of an inter-professional team and act as a consultant to other disciplines and outside agencies.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education/Experience:

• A degree or equivalent from an accredited Occupational Therapy program
• Current unrestricted registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO)

Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to manage a clinical practice in a health care setting
• Ability to complete analysis, using clinical knowledge, skill and judgement to synthesize assessment information
• Ability to assess and treat acute and chronic neurological, orthopaedic, and geriatric conditions and psychosocial issues
• Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Ability to work independently, interdependently, and collaboratively within a model of interprofessional care
• Ability to develop and maintain respectful partnerships
• Commitment to excellence and leadership in Rehabilitative Care especially related to stroke
• Ability to lead inter-professional and inter-organizational collaboration, to facilitate an excellent client care experience
• Commitment to clinical excellence and use of Best Practices especially the Canadian Stroke Best Practices
• Demonstrated commitment to Client-Centred Care approach and principles
• Ability to demonstrate reflective practice
• Strong project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
• Ability to use independent judgment and maintain confidentiality of records, actions, and information
• Demonstrated regular attendance at work

Asset:

• Experience with virtual care technology (i.e. Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN), Webex, etc) is an asset
• Assistive Devices Program (ADP) authorization is an asset
• Memberships in the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists (OSOT) and/or Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) are strongly encouraged

Conditions of Employment:

• This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
• Will be required to travel to various work locations throughout Northwestern Ontario and provide own transportation
• Maintains/updates liability insurance on a yearly basis
