 Sous l’autorité de la Direction des Services aux nouveaux arrivants, le/la travailleur(euse) en établissement dans les écoles intervient auprès des parents ayant des enfants d’âge scolaire et auprès du personnel enseignant pour assurer l’intégration harmonieuse des familles nouvellement établies dans la région du Niagara au système scolaire de l’Ontario.  Il/elle facilite auprès des familles l’apprentissage du fonctionnement scolaire et intervient au besoin auprès des enfants afin qu’ils arrivent à une intégration optimale.

Settlement Worker in Schools 

Full time  – 35 hours per week

Contract until March 31, 2026 with possibility of renewal

Location: Welland

Annual salary range: $44 317 to $53,051, excellent benefits

Reporting to the Newcomer Services Director, the Settlement Worker in Schools works with parents of school-aged children and teachers to ensure the smooth integration of newcomer families in the Niagara region into the Ontario school system.  He/she assists families in learning school operations and intervenes with children as needed to ensure their optimal integration.

Primary Responsibilities

- Assessing the needs of clients requesting settlement and educational intervention services

- Facilitate access to the school system for newly arrived families

- Informing newcomer families of their rights and obligations, and of disparities in Canadian mores, customs and values

- Accompanying families as needed in advocating for their children's education

- Referring clients as needed to community resources and other settlement services

- Intervene with teachers to facilitate communication and constructive relationships with newcomer families

- Informing and orienting teachers to the challenges of integration into Canada

- Follow-up with teachers and school resources to facilitate student integration

- Provide activities, tools and resources to newcomer families and education workers

- Compile statistics and submit monthly reports

 

Specific Skills and Requirements

- University degree or college diploma in a social work or human services program, or equivalent work experience and training in a related field

- Two to four years of experience working with newcomers

- In-depth knowledge of the special needs of the refugee and immigrant population

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including proven ability to facilitate groups

- In-depth knowledge of community resources

- Ability to design, plan and implement programs, services and response systems to meet the needs of newcomers

- Ability to deal effectively with crises

- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment

- Ability to speak and write French and English

- Enjoy working with youth

- Willingness to work flexible hours and travel to meet client needs

- Possess a valid driver's license and have a vehicle at his/her disposal
